Garnishes

My favourite garnish that I saw was parrots made out of pineapple and watermelon.

This is my favourite garnish because I think it is super creative the way that they used the outside of the pineapple to create a garnish for the pineapple itself. I also think it is super cute and a tropical touch to something that you would usually have in the tropics, and there are generally these types of birds in the tropics as well. I think that a cute finishing touch is the little beak made out of watermelon, which is also a fruit that you can find in the tropics.

Cucumber Rose Garnish

The tools I used to make this garnish are a cutting board, a knife, and a cucumber.

To make this garnish, I sliced the cucumber into super thin slices, and then I arranged it into a line, each overlapping one another. Then, I began rolling them up into a spiral/rose shape.

I would use this to garnish a vegetable platter, or even a cheese platter. I think that you could also use this to garnish some sort of salad, or light appetizer/main course.

I actually found this garnish to be super difficult, in all the steps. To start, slicing the cucumber into thin enough slices to be able to roll I found quite challenging, because they had to be the perfect thickness and getting them thin enough without accidentally cutting off a part of it was challenging. Another thing I found quite challenging was rolling it into a rose shape. The rose would fall apart quite often, and when I tried to secure it with toothpicks they simply just broke. So, to take the photo, I used a thicker toothpick and I held it up to the light so you can see all the layer within the flower. I originally chose this garnish because we were having salad for dinner, and I thought it would be a nice way to garnish it.

Apple Swan Garnish

For this garnish, I used a cutting board, a knife, an apple, a plate, and a toothpick.

To make this garnish, I first sliced the apple in half and got rid of the core. Then, I took half of the apple and cut out pieces out of each side. Out of those pieces, I cut out another piece. Then, I arranged them into “wings” on the swan. Then, I took a piece from the other half of the apple, and cut out a head shape. Using a toothpick, I attached the head onto the body of the swan.

I think this would look super nice on a fruit platter, or as a decoration on a cake or other dessert.

I did not find this garnish too difficult to make. Overall the only step I found challenging was making sure all the cuts were precise and that I did not accidentally cut through the sides of the apple. I chose this garnish to make because I thought it was super cute and that it would not be too difficult to make, as I am not experienced in crafting garnishes.

Mandarin Orange Garnish

For this garnish, I used a knife, a cutting board, a plate, and two mini mandarin oranges.

Firstly, I peeled both of the mini mandarins and removed the majority of the white stuff which was left over from the peel. Then, I took segments and sliced them in half and arranged them in a flower on a plate. For a finishing touch, I used some of the leftover pieces of cucumber and cut them into leaf shapes and arranged them onto the plate as well.

I would use this also as a garnish for a fruit platter or for some type of dessert such as a cake or even a pie.

I did not find this garnish to be too difficult, I think this was definitely the easiest garnish to make. The process was not difficult. I chose this garnish because I think that it looks much more difficult than it actually is, and my thinking was to spice it up a little with some of the cucumber as well to make it a bit more fancy. I would obviously not put the cucumber if I was using this flower to garnish a dessert such as a cake.
